Apa Itu Past Tense ?

Past Tense digunakan untuk menggambarkan pekerjaan yang dimulai di waktu lampau dan berakhir di waktu lampau atau bisa juga masih berlangsung hingga kini.

Menurut Kamus Merriam-Webster, past tense didefinisikan sebagai:

a verb tense expressing action or state in or as if in the past:

– a verb tense expressive of elapsed time (such as wrote in “on arriving I wrote a letter”)

– a verb tense expressing action or state in progress or continuance or habitually done or customarily occurring at a past time (such as was writing in “I was writing while he dictated” or loved in “their sons loved fishing”)

Kapan Kita Menggunakan Simple Past Tense ?

Kita menggunakan simple past tense saat kita ingin:

Menyatakan kejadian lampau yang juga berakhir di waktu lampau, biasanya disertai waktu terjadinya.

Menyatakan kebiasaan masa lalu (mirip dengan penggunaan used to).
– I played the guitar when I was young.

Menyatakan durasi sebuah kejadian di masa lalu (disertai penggunaan for).

Kapan Kita Menggunakan Past Continuous Tense ?

Menyatakan kejadian lampau yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu tertentu.
– Jodie was watching TV at seven o’clock yesterday.

Menyatakan dua kejadian lampau yang sedang berlangsung secara bersamaan.
– While Virna was swimming, David was reading newspaper.

Menyatakan kejadian lampau yang disela oleh kejadian lainnya.

Kapan Kita Menggunakan Past Perfect Tense ?

Menyatakan suatu peristiwa lampau yang berakhir sebelum kejadian lampau lainnnya.

Membuat kalimat tak langsung atau indirect speech.

Menyatakan penyesalan atas perbuatan di masa lalu.

Kalimat past perfect continuous tense biasanya digunakan ketika:

Menyatakan kejadian lampau yang telah berlangsung beberapa saat hingga kejadian lampau lainnya.

Menyatakan peristiwa yang dimulai di masa lampau dan masih berlangsung di saat itu.
